Sergeant Major Zachary Doty was born in Webster, TX in December 1982. He graduated from Graham High School in Graham, NC in 2001. He enlisted in the Marine Corps and reported to MCRD Parris Island, SC in August 2001 for recruit training. Upon his graduation as a Private First Class in November 2001, he reported to Marine Combat Training at Camp Geiger and then attended the Military Police Basic MOS school in Fort Leonard Wood, MO from December 2001 to March 2002.
In March of 2002, Private First Class Doty reported for duty to the Provost Marshals Office in MCAS Cherry Point, NC. Lance Corporal Doty was selected to serve as a member of the Special Reaction Team and was meritoriously promoted to Corporal in March 2003. In October 2004, Corporal Doty reported to 2nd Military Police Battalion and assumed the billets of Squad Leader and Platoon Sergeant. He deployed twice to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, February 2005 until September 2005, and March 2006 until October 2006.
In December 2006, Sergeant Doty reported to MCRD, Parris Island, SC for Drill Instructor School. Upon graduation in March 2007, he was assigned to G Company, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion where he held billets as a Drill Instructor, Senior Drill Instructor, Receiving Operations Chief, and SNCOIC. He was promoted to Staff Sergeant meritoriously in July 2008. In May 2010, Staff Sergeant Doty reported to Marine Helicopter Squadron One in Quantico, VA and filled the billets of Trip Security Officer, Physical Security Chief and Services Chief.
In May 2014, Staff Sergeant Doty was selected for assignment as an Assistant Marine Officer Instructor and was attached to Officer Candidate School where he served as a Physical Training Instructor until August 2014. Staff Sergeant Doty then reported for duty as an Assistant Marine Officer Instructor at NROTC Duke University Durham, NC where he was promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant in September 2014.
In August 2017, Gunnery Sergeant Doty reported for duty at the Provost Marshals Office MCB Butler, Okinawa where he served as the Physical Security Chief until his selection to First Sergeant. In February 2018, First Sergeant Doty was assigned to 3d Maintenance Battalion, Okinawa, Japan. First Sergeant Doty served as the Company First Sergeant for Motor Transport Maintenance Company until 21 July 2019.
In August 2019, First Sergeant Doty received orders to serve as the Company First Sergeant, Headquarters Company, Marine Raider Support Group, Camp Lejeune, NC. In April 2020, he was assigned to 3d Marine Raider Battalion where he deployed in support of Operation Inherent Resolve from January 2021 until July 2021 with Marine Special Operations Company November. He then served as Headquarters Company First Sergeant, Marine Raider Regiment until his promotion to Sergeant Major in August 2022. He currently serves as the 2nd Battalion, 10th Marines Battalion Sergeant Major.
His personal awards include the Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal W/ “C” (w/ three gold star), Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal (w/ one gold star), Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, and the Combat Action Ribbon.
