Battalion Lineage

1940-1947

Activated 1 November 1940 at San Diego, California, as the 1st Battalion, 10th Marines and assigned to the 2d Marine Brigade, Fleet Marine Force. 2d Marine Brigade re-designated 1 February 1941 as the 2d Marine Division. Re-designated 23 December 1941 as 1st Battalion, 10th Marines, 2d Marine Brigade, 2d Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force. Deployed during January 1942 to American Samoa and detached from the 2d Marine Division. Reassigned during September 1942 to the 8th Marines, 2d Marine Brigade. Detached during October 1942 from the 2d Marine Brigade. Redeployed during November 1942 to Guadalcanal and attached to the 11th Marines, 1st Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force. Reassigned during December 1942 to the 8th Marines. Reassigned during February 1943 to 2d Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force. Participated in the following World War II Campaigns:

OKINAWA

Participated in the occupation of Japan September 1945- June 1946. Relocated during July 1946 to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Deactivated 18 November 1947.

1948-2004

Reactivated 1 December 1948 at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina as the 1st Battalion, 10th Marines, 2d Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force. Participated in the Cuban Missile Crisis, October- December 1962. Relocated during May 1971 to Washington, D.C., as part of a civil disturbance Battalion for anticipated anti-war demonstration. Relocated during May 1971 to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Deployed during the late 1970's and early 1980's to Europe for participation in North Atlantic Treaty Organization exercises. Participated in Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm, Southwest Asia. August 1990- February 1991 Element participated in Operation Support Democracy and Uphold Democracy, Haiti. August - October 1994 Element participated in Operation Able Manner, Florida Straits. August- September 1994 Deployed during February 2003 to Kuwait in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Participated in Operation Iraqi Freedom, Iraq March- May 2003.
