Biography

Commanding Officer, 1st Battalion, 10th Marines
Lieutenant Colonel Joseph R. Mozzi

Lieutenant Colonel Mozzi is a native of Dalton, Massachusetts and a 2009 graduate of Norwich University. Upon completion of The Basic School and the Field Artillery Officer Basic Course, he was assigned to 2d Battalion, 11th Marines where he served as a Company Fire Support Officer. Attached to 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, he deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom 11.1, conducting combat operations in Sangin, Afghanistan. Following deployment, he served as Battery Executive Officer, Headquarters Battery, 11th Marine Regiment; and Battery Executive Officer, Battery C, 1st Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment.

In 2013 he was assigned to 5th Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company in Okinawa Japan where he served as Firepower Control Team Leader, Supporting Arms Liaison Team Leader, and Assistant Operations Officer. In 2017, he served as a Platoon Commander at Officer Candidates School supporting the Officer Candidates Course before executing orders to 1st Battalion, 10th Marines.

While serving with 1st Battalion, 10th Marines, Lieutenant Colonel Mozzi commanded Battery A, subsequently serving as the Battalion Assistant Operations Officer and OIC of the 2d Marine Regimental Fire Support Team. He executed orders to The Basic School in 2019 where he served in the Warfighting Instructor Group before commanding Basic Officer Courses 3-20 (Charlie Company) and 2-21 (Bravo Company).

In 2022 Lieutenant Colonel Mozzi reported to 10th Marine Regiment where he served as 2d Marine Division Deputy Assistant Fire Support Coordinator. Following this assignment he reported to 2d Battalion, 10th Marines to assume duties as the Battalion Executive Officer. He executed orders to 12th Marine Littoral Regiment in 2024, where he served as the regiment's Fires and Effects Coordinator. Selected to command 1st Battalion, 10th Marines, he executed orders to Camp Lejeune in June of 2025.

Lieutenant Colonel Mozzi's personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (with gold star), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (with gold star), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (with gold star), and the Combat Action Ribbon.

Lieutenant Colonel Mozzi holds a Bachelor's degree in History from Norwich University, a Master of Arts in International Relations from Norwich University, and a Master of Arts in Diplomacy from Norwich University. He is a graduate of the Marine Corps Expeditionary Warfare School and the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, from which he holds a Masters in Operational Studies.
