Commanding Officer, 2d Battalion, 10th Marines
Lieutenant Colonel Ryan L. Mathews

Lieutenant Colonel Mathews is a native of Miami, FL, and holds a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Central Florida. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in December of 2005. Upon completing The Basic School, he attended the Officer Basic Course at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and was subsequently assigned to Battery F, 2nd Battalion, 10th Marines, 2D Marine Division.

In October 2007, he deployed to Iraq as Regional Detention Facility AlAsad Officer in Charge in support of Task Force Military Police. From April 2009 to April 2010, he deployed with Sth Battalion, 10th Marines to Afghanistan. He served as the Battery R, Executive Officer, executed a provisional infantry mission, and then served as the Battalion Assistant Operation Officer. Lieutenant Colonel Mathews supported both Operations Khanjar and Moshtarak during this deployment.

In April 2010, Lieutenant Colonel Mathews was assigned to 1st Air-Naval Gunfire-Liaison Company (ANGLICO), I MEF, as a joint terminal attack controller. In May 2011, he deployed to OEF 12.2 as FCT 5 leader and supported multiple Afghanistan National Army Battalions. Following the deployment, Lieutenant Colonel Mathews led Supporting Arms Liaison Team (SALT) C through numerous training exercises in support of joint and allied partners. He finished his assignment to 1st ANGLICO as the Assistant Operations Officer and JTAC evaluator.

In July 2013, Lieutenant Colonel Mathews attended Expeditionary Warfare School and graduated in May 2014. Following school, Lieutenant Colonel Mathews was assigned to 1st Battalion, 12th Marines, where he served as the Assistant Operations Officer until assuming command of Battery A. In June 2015, Lieutenant Colonel Mathews deployed in support of the Unit Deployment Program to Okinawa, Japan. Upon his return, he supported Integrated Training Exercise (ITX) 2-16 and then relinquished command of Battery A and assumed command of Headquarters Battery.

After successful battery command tours, Lieutenant Colonel Mathews was assigned to The Basic School (TBS) in August 2016. At TBS, he served as the Assistant Operations Officer, commanded Alpha Company 1-18, and was the Deputy Director of Warfighting. Following his tour at TBS, Lieutenant Colonel Mathews attended Marine Corps Command and Staff College and graduated with a Master of Military Studies in June 2020.

In June 2020, Lieutenant Colonel Mathews was assigned to the 1st Marine Division at Camp Pendleton and served as the Operations Officer for 1st Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment. In June 2021, he reported to 11th Marines to serve as Operations Officer.

Lieutenant Colonel Mathews assumed command of 2nd Battalion, 10th Marines on 10 August 2022.

Lieutenant Colonel Mathews’ personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal with one gold star, Navy Commendation Medal with two gold stars, Navy Achievement Medal with gold star, and the Combat Action Ribbon. Lieutenant Colonel Mathews and his wife Laura have been married since 2015 and have one son named Ian.
