Sergeant Major, 1st Battalion, 10th Marines
Sergeant Major Phillip J. Anderson

Sergeant Major Anderson was born in Asheville, North Carolina in 1975. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in February of 1993 and reported to 2d Recruit Training Battalion in Parris Island, South Carolina in August of 1993.  Upon completion of Recruit training he was assigned to Marine Combat Training (MCT) at Camp Geiger, NC; after graduating MCT he was transferred to Fort Sill, Oklahoma where he attended his formal Military Occupation Specialty (MOS) School (Marine Corps Cannon Crewman Course)

In January 1994 he was assigned to Kilo Battery 3d Battalion 10th Marines, 2d Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, NC where he served as a Gunner, Section Chief and Local Security Chief. During this tour, he deployed with the 24th MEU (SOC) on board the USS Kearsarge in support of Operations Provide Promise and Deny Flight in the former Yugoslavia and Bosnia areas of operations. He was meritoriously promoted to rank of Sergeant on 02 February 1997.

In March of 1997, he was transferred to the Artillery Demonstration Unit, Quantico, Virginia where he served as a Section Chief, Platoon Sergeant, Corporals Course Instructor and S-4 Operations Chief for The Basic School. In January of 2000 he volunteered for Drill Instructor duty and received orders for DI School Class 3-00.

In April 2000, he was promoted to Staff Sergeant and attended Drill Instructor School at Parris Island, SC and upon graduation was assigned to Fox Company, 2d Recruit Training Battalion. During his tour he served 4 cycles as a Junior Drill Instructor, 4 as a Senior Drill Instructor, 1 as a Chief Drill Instructor and as a Platoon Sergeant / Platoon Commander for the Basic Marine Platoon.

In September 2003, he was transferred to India Battery, 3d Battalion 10th Marines, Camp Lejeune, NC where he served as a Local Security Chief, Platoon Sergeant and Battery Gunnery Sergeant. His Battery was deployed in 2005 with the 26th MEU (SOC) in support of Operation Infinite Moonlight and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

In August 2006, he volunteered for duty with Military Transition Team 3 where he served as an Operations Chief, Convoy Commander and Iraqi Scout Platoon Advisor for the 2d Brigade 7th Iraqi Army Division in the Western Al Anbar Province of Iraq until November 2007.

In January 2008, he returned to 10th Marines where he served as an Instructor at 10th Marines Artillery Training School until receiving orders to Officer Training Command Newport, RI.  He reported for duty as a Drill Instructor for Navy Officer Candidate School in May 2008. During his tour he served as a Drill Instructor for 9 cycles, Battalion SNCOIC, Operations Chief, and Regimental Drill Master. He was promoted to GySgt in July 2009.

In June 2011, he was transferred to Fox Battery 2/12, 3d Battalion 10th Marines, Camp Lejeune, NC,  where he served as the Battery Gunnery Sergeant and Battery First Sergeant until his reassignment to 3/10 NTM-A (NATO Training Mission Afghanistan) in February 2012. GySgt Anderson deployed from May to October 2012 with 3/10 NTM-A to Afghanistan as an advisor to the Afghan National Civil Order Police in the Maiwand Province of Southern Afghanistan. Upon returning from Afghanistan he was assigned to Lima Battery, 3/10 where he served as the Battery 1stSgt and Battery GySgt.  In May 2013, 3d Battalion 10th Marines was disbanded and he was transferred to HQ's Battery 2d Battalion 10th Marines to serve as the HQ's Battery GySgt.

In January 2014 he was promoted and reported for duty as the Company First Sergeant for India Company, 3d Battalion 2d Marines where he served until July 2015 when he was reassigned to H&S Company. He served as H&S Co 1stSgt until May 2017 when he received orders to Inspector and Instructor duty.

In June 2017, he reported for duty as the Inspector and Instructor First Sergeant for Communications Company, 14th Marine Regiment in Cincinnati, Ohio. He served here until August 2018 when he was promoted to Sergeant Major.

20 August 2018 Sergeant Major Anderson reported for duty as the Squadron Sergeant Major for Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 363 "Lucky Red Lions" in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. He deployed with VMM-363 (Rein) as the Aviation Combat Element SgtMaj for Marine Rotational Force Darwin 19.2. He served the "Lucky Red Lions" until February 2021 when he received orders to 1st Battalion, 10th Marines in Camp Lejeune, NC.

March 1st 2021 Sergeant Major Anderson reported to 1st Battalion, 10th Marines, 2d Marine Division FMF where he currently serves as the Battalion Sergeant Major for "Nightmare Battalion".

Sergeant Major Anderson is a graduate of the Air Force Senior NCO Academy at Air University, Maxwell AFB. His personal awards include the Bronze Star Medal; Meritorious Service Medal (1 gold star in lieu of 2nd award); Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (3 gold stars in lieu of 4th award) and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (2 gold stars in lieu of 3rd award)
